Fish worth RO36 million produced in Dhofar in 2021

Muscat – A total of 83,753 tons of fish, worth RO 36 million, were landed in Dhofar in 2021, with small pelagic fish accounting for about 52% and demersal fish accounting for 26% of the total production in the governorate.

The number of fishermen in Dhofar reached 11,632 in 2021, in addition to those working in other related sectors such as transport, fish sales, specialized factories, maritime workshops, ports, shops selling supplies fishing and more.

Engineer Rashid bin Saeed al Ghafri, Director General of the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Dhofar, said: “The ministry is working to encourage the optimal use of various abundant marine resources in the governorate to ensure its sustainability and development in line with Oman Vision 2040.”

Fishing is an important activity in Dhofar due to its diverse and rich fish wealth. Ghafri also stressed the importance of establishing fishing projects and industries in the governorate that serve the local community and support the national economy.

“The general management of Dhofar is working to develop the sector through several projects and programs including controlling fish along the coasts and supporting fishermen and fish sector workers,” he said.

The number of fishing boats in the governorate reached 4,477 in 2021, while the number of artisanal fishing boats reached 79.
